One of my favourite science-fiction books, Ready Player One first published in 2011 and has since sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. In 2018 it was even adapted into a movie by Steven Spielberg, and a second book Ready Player Two was published in 2020.
Originally published in 1988, Matilda is a timeless story that has inspired generations of readers. It’s a tale for anyone who has ever felt different, like they don’t quite fit in, or would happily escape into the pages of a book.
Matilda has since been adapted into two films, once in 1996 and again in 2022, as well as a musical that has been running in London’s West End since 2011. Brought to life by Tim Minchin’s witty lyrics, the musical won seven Olivier Awards in its opening year and opened on Broadway in 2013.
First published in 2018, Normal People was Sally Rooney’s debut novel. Its popularity established her an exceptional contemporary writer, captivating audiences with its problematic protagonists, Marianne and Connell.
As endearing as they are frustrating, the story follows the pair as they navigate early adulthood in a way that many readers find relatable. It was even adapted into a television series with Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones in 2020.
Here are 15 quotes from Normal People, focusing on two themes: love and life.

John Green’s first novel, Looking for Alaska was published in 2005 and was adapted into a TV drama in 2019.
Here’s a reminder of what it’s about:
“BEFORE. Miles Halter’s whole life has been one big non-event until he starts at anything-but-boring Culver Creek Boarding School and meets Alaska Young. Gorgeous, clever, funny and utterly fascinating she pulls Miles into her world, launches him into a new life, and steals his heart. But when tragedy strikes, and Miles comes face-to-face with death he discovers the value of living and loving unconditionally.
AFTER: Nothing will ever be the same.”
First published in 2017, Turtles All The Way Down is inspired by John Green’s own experiences of living with OCD. When did you first read The Fault in Our Stars?
I remember when I did - I was 17, the same age as the protagonist Hazel Grace Lancaster - and it was the first John Green book that I’d ever read. The beautiful language has stayed with me all of these years, and Green’s masterful writing makes it a modern classic in the young adult genre.
Recently adapted into a hugely popular Netflix series, One of Us is Lying sucks viewers into an addictive murder mystery story featuring four high school aged suspects, after one of their classmates mysteriously dies in detention at the beginning of the semester.
