The Twits Afternoon Tea at London County Hall - Review

(Ad, invite - I attended this experience for free in return for an honest review)

I’m always on the lookout for new literary themed activities, so when I heard that Marriott were hosting a Roald Dahl themed afternoon tea, I knew that I had to give it a try.

Based on Roald Dahl’s book The Twits, this afternoon tea takes place in Marriott’s London County Hall hotel, which is right next to the London Eye and London’s South Bank. The dining room itself can be found opposite the library where they serve traditional afternoon teas - it is a little bit difficult to find but there’s plenty of staff on hand to give directions.

Upon arrival, I was very impressed with the way that the restaurant was decorated. Hosted in a separate room from the traditional afternoon teas, the space was filled with references to The Twits with plenty of opportunities for photos. You can see from my images below that part of the room was furnished to resemble the living room belonging to Mr and Mrs Twit, while the rest of the room had a purple and green colour scheme running throughout.

Once we were seated, the waiter presented us with the menu and asked if we had any dietary requirements. Marriott have really committed to the theming and the menu is based on references to food and moments from the books. I particularly loved the ‘Trick or Twit’ scones, which came in marmite and plain varieties where we had to guess which was which (I could just about tell which the marmite ones were by smelling them). We were also served ‘Fizzy Drinks’ macarons with popping candy, ‘Bird Pie’ and ‘Maggoty Green Cheese and Mouldy Cornflakes’. Of course, these tasted much better than they sounded.

As this is a family friendly activity, the afternoon tea comes with a separate menu for children, with the main difference being that the kids menu has alternative drink options. These include Skillywiggler Lemonade with Frogspawn (Lemonade & Apple Pearls), as well as Roly-Poly Berry Juice, (Berry Milkshake with White Chocolate Feather).

While I would say that this wasn’t the most delicious afternoon tea I’ve ever had, it’s definitely the most unique and I would recommend visiting for the novelty factor and overall experience. If you have young people in your life who love Roald Dahl and The Twits, then I have a feeling they’ll love this too.

How much does it cost?

The pricing for The Twits Afternoon Tea varies depending on who is dining.

Adult afternoon teas are priced from £65 per person, while the children’s afternoon tea starts at £45 per person.

The room is also available to hire for private events, and prices for this are available upon request.

How to find the Marriott London County Hall

The hotel is just a short walk away from London Waterloo station, which is served by a variety of train services and underground lines. Taxis are also available if you would prefer not to walk.

Let me know if you have a favourite Roald Dahl book, and if you’re planning to try the afternoon tea!
