Painting Pottery Cafe, Brighton - Review

I recently visited the Painting Pottery Cafe in Brighton as part of my 30th birthday celebrations. Here’s everything you need to know.

Located just a short distance away from Brighton train station, the Painting Pottery Cafe is a small establishment with a great atmosphere.

Ahead of my trip I booked a table for two, which cost £10 at the time of booking to cover the studio fee. Upon arrival, the staff showed us to our table and asked us to pick which pieces we wanted to paint.

There was a huge selection available to choose from, including everything from plates, mugs and bowls to ceramic animals. As it was September, I decided to paint a pumpkin while my friend chose an espresso mug.

Each table is allocated 2 hours to paint from their arrival time. We were particularly grateful during our visit as the staff extended our painting time due to our delayed arrival, following an accident on the train line.

The cafe is well equipped, with a range of paint colours and tools, including small instruments for intricate detailing. Before we started, the cafe staff explained the process to us, ensuring that we wiped the ceramics down before painting to remove any dust. There was a small plate on the table which showed how the colours would look after they were fired and glazed.

You can see the pumpkin that I painted above. I’m hardly an artistic genius, but we had lots of fun! We also enjoyed hot drinks from the cafe’s menu while we painted. Cakes were also available, and all sessions operate on a BYOB basis. We had a fantastic time and I would definitely recommend visiting yourself.

Pricing

All bookings are charged a studio fee of £5 per person which covers the cost of firing and glazing. Upon arrival, there are a range of ceramics to choose from at a variety of price points ranging from £13 - £50. We also paid an additional £8 fee to have the finished items posted to us after firing, as my friend and I do not live locally.

It takes up to 10 days for items to be fired and available for collection.

Opening times and how to book

The cafe is open every day of the week with three sessions: 10:30am, 1pm and 3:30pm. Evening sessions are open for adults on the first and last Thursday of each month, lasting from 6 or 7 to 9pm.

In addition to pottery painting, the cafe also runs taster throwing sessions and evening classes if you’d like to learn how to make pottery yourself.

Whether painting or throwing, it is recommended that you book in advance on their website.

How to find the Painting Pottery Cafe

The best way to reach the cafe is by train to Brighton station, which is just a ten minute walk away. Local buses are also available. Parking is notoriously difficult in Brighton, although there are two car parks nearby if you opt to drive (although these may be expensive).

The cafe’s full address is:

The Painting Pottery Cafe, 31 North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YB

I had a fantastic time at the Painting Pottery Cafe and would highly recommend a visit, whether that’s with friends or family, young or old.
