Southampton’s Secret Beach: Weston Shore

The city of Southampton is well known as one of the UK’s major ports – a place to catch a cruise or peruse the yachts in the marina. But did you know that it actually has a secret beach that only the locals know about?

Situated on the east side of the city, Weston Shore is the single remaining beach in Southampton. It’s shingle rather than sand, but that doesn’t take away from just how lovely it is. There’s history here too; during the build up to D-Day this stretch of land was filled with troops and equipment in preparation for the operation.

You can also walk right down the Weston Promenade to find Netley Castle, which is a former artillery fort dating back to 1542/1544 during the rule of Henry VIII. Its original purpose was to protect Southampton from a potential invasion, but it’s now been converted into a private residence.

How to get here

Weston Shore is located between the suburbs of Woolston and Weston, with Woolston being the nearest train station. There are also free parking spaces where you can leave your car should you choose to drive.

I’d highly recommend visiting at sunset like we did for some glorious views. Next time you fancy a stroll down the beach, but don’t want to drive all the way to Bournemouth, why not pop down to Weston Shore and enjoy some of our local Southampton scenery.
