How Many Percy Jackson Books Are There?

A popular children’s fantasy series written by Rick Riordan, the first Percy Jackson book was published in 2005. Heavily inspired by Greek mythology, the original seven book series follows protagonist Percy Jackson as he discovers that he’s the son of the water god Poseidon.

These are widely considered to be one of bestselling book series of all time, selling 180 million copies around the world in dozens of languages. Two following series were later released in the same universe, but following different characters: The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo. A further standalone novel titled The Sun and the Star was published in 2024 and written in collaboration with Mark Oshiro.

The Percy Jackson books have famously been adapted for the screen, both as a successful three part film series and an original television series for Disney Plus.

Here are all of the books from the Percy Jackson universe in order and sorted by series. Enjoy!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

This is the original Percy Jackson series written by Rick Riordan.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, 2005

Synopsis:

“Look, I never asked to be the son of a Greek god. I was just a normal kid… until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher.

Percy Jackson is having a bad week. His life has gone from totally normal to monsters-from-Greek-mythology-randomly-appearing kind of strange. Worse still, the king of the gods thinks Percy has stolen his all-powerful lightning bolt - and it seems making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to catch the true lightning thief and stop all-out war from erupting on Mount Olympus…

What could possibly go wrong?”

Now Camp Half-Blood - the only safe place on earth for demigods like Percy - is under attack, and unless he can find the magical Golden Fleece, everything he's come to love will be destroyed.

Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their camp. But as the son of the sea god - how hard can this quest be?”

The Chalice of the Gods, 2023

Synopsis:

“The original hero. A brand-new adventure.

Percy Jackson has saved the world multiple times - battling monsters, Titans, even giants - but these days the modern-day son of Poseidon is hoping for a regular final year at school. Too bad the Greek gods have other plans, and three new quests for Percy to complete.

First up: the cupbearer of the gods, Ganymede, is missing his golden chalice. Not only is this embarrassing (why do the gods keep losing their magical items?), it's also potentially disastrous. One sip from the cup will turn any mortal into a powerful god. And the old gods do not take kindly to newbies.

Can Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover find the chalice before it falls into the wrong hands? And even if they do, will they be able to resist its awesome power?”

Wrath of the Triple Goddess

Synopsis:

“Percy Jackson has saved the world multiple times – battling monsters, Titans, even death himself – so graduating high school should be a breeze, right?

Wrong. Percy needs three recommendation letters from the gods before his final year in high school comes to an end. And one thing Percy knows, the gods on Mount Olympus don’t do anything for free.

To secure his second letter, Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover agree to a new quest – pet-sitting for the goddess Hecate while she’s away over Halloween. They just need to follow her simple rules:

  1. Look after the pets like their lives depend on it (because they do)

  2. Don’t touch anything – especially Hecate’s magic potions!

  3. See points 1 and 2

But when Grover’s curiosity gets the better of him, the trio find themselves with a giant goat, a destroyed house, and Hecate’s (terrifying and potentially deadly) pets on the loose in New York City.

Now the trio have twenty-four hours to find the pets and restore the mansion to order – or face the full fury of Hecate and her horrifying three-heads.”

“When Jason, Piper and Leo crash land at Camp Half-Blood, they have no idea what to expect.

Apparently this is the only safe place for children of the Greek Gods - despite the monsters roaming the woods and demigods practising archery with flaming arrows and explosives.

But rumours of a terrible curse - and a missing hero - are flying around camp. It seems Jason, Piper and Leo are the chosen ones to embark on a terrifying new quest, which they must complete by the winter solstice.

In just four days time. Can the trio succeed on this deadly mission - and what must they sacrifice in order to survive?”

The Son of Neptune, 2011

Synopsis:

“This crazy messed up world of gods and monsters is Percy Jackson's reality, which pretty much sucks for him.

Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, God of the Sea, has woken from a very deep sleep and come face to face with two snake-haired ladies who refuse to die.

But they're the least of his problems. Because Percy finds himself at a camp for half-bloods, which doesn't ring any bells for him. There's just one name he remembers from his past.

Annabeth.

Only one thing is certain - Percy's questing days aren't over. He and fellow demigods Frank and Hazel must face the most important quest of all: the Prophecy of Seven. If they fail, it's not just their camp at risk. Percy's old life, the gods, and the entire world might be destroyed…”

“Annabeth felt as if someone had draped a cold washcloth across her neck. She heard that whispering laughter again, as if the presence had followed her from the ship.

She looked up at the Argo II. Its massive bronze hull glittered in the sunlight. Part of her wanted to kidnap Percy right now, get on board and get out of here while they still could.

She couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong. She couldn't risk losing Percy again.”

The House of Hades, 2013

Synopsis:

“Lost in the depths of the Underworld, Percy and Annabeth’s lives rest in the hands of their friends and fellow demigods – Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel and Frank.

Unsure if they’ll ever see Percy and Annabeth again, the five must put aside their grief and find the mortal side of the Doors of Death to follow Percy’s final instructions. The doors must be sealed to stop the giants from wakening Gaea, the primordial goddess. But between them and the door lies a vicious army intent on raising the goddess.

If the demigods can fight their way through the army to seal the door – and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades long enough – the seven might just be able to stop the destruction of Camp Half-Blood… and the whole world with it!”

The Blood of Olympus, 2014

Synopsis:

“Though the Greek and Roman crew members of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen - all of them - and they're stronger than ever.

The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over…”

Cast down from Olympus, he's weak, disorientated and stuck in New York City as a teenage boy. It's the first time he's been without his powers, and he has to survive in the modern world.

Which isn't an easy feat for a four-thousand-year old deity, especially one with as many enemies as he has.”

There's only one way he can earn back Zeus' favour, and that's to seek and restore the ancient oracles - but that's easier said than done. Apollo must head to the American Midwest where, rumour has it, a haunted cave may hold answers.

There are a few things standing in his way though. The cave could kill him, or drive him insane.Oh, and a Roman Emperor, whose love of bloodshed makes Nero look tame.

Though he and some of his friends have emerged from the Burning Maze, rescued the Oracle and lived to fight another day, they can't escape the tragedy that has befallen them, or the terrible trials still to face.

So, with heavy heart, Apollo (OK, Lester) and Meg have a triumvirate still to defeat, oracles to rescue, and prophecies to decipher, so that the world may be saved, and Lester may ascend into the heavens to become Apollo once again.

But, right now, Caligula is sailing to San Francisco to deal with Camp Jupiter personally, and they have to get there first. Failure would mean its destruction.”
