Hello Fresh Meal Kit Review

As a novice when it comes to cooking my own food, I’m a big fan of meal delivery kits like Hello Fresh.

I’ve found that they make it much easier to cook new food without any previous understanding or skills (of which I admittedly have little). I’ve had Hello Fresh delivered before so I was excited to receive one of their boxes in return for an honest review.

What I cooked

Before the box arrived I was able to check the weekly menu and pick which recipes I wanted to try. As I vegetarian I mostly picked meat free meals: two for me to eat on my own, one for me to eat with my partner, and one meat dish for my partner to prepare for himself.

Although the choice for vegetarians was a bit limited, I did find plenty of things that I wanted to eat and I was excited for the box to arrive so I could try them.

The first dish that I cooked was the Super Quick Creamy Tikka Dal with Basmati Rice, Peas and Crispy Onions - an easy choice because curry is my favourite meal.

The next dish that I made was the Smoky Gochujang, BBQ and Bean Jacky-P with Cheese and Sesame Slaw, although I omitted the cheese and slaw. After that I made the Mushroom and Goat's Cheese Burger with Balsamic Caramelised Onion, Peashoots and Wedges for myself and my partner (again, leaving out the cheese).

The final dish, Quick Hot Honey Chicken Tacos with Buttery Cajun Potatoes and Cheddar Cheese, was prepared by my partner.

What I Thought

When it came to actually cooking the meals, I found that the recipe cards were easy to follow with step by step instructions. The ingredients were packaged in a single brown paper bag and pre-proportioned, which sped up the whole process.

Some of the recipes required a sprinkle of ingredients from my own cupboard, such as salt or sugar, and I did initially find it hard to work out how much I needed to use. Despite that, I was pleased with how the meals turned out and I think they look pretty good in the photos too!

Each meal could be divided into two portions, which meant that when I was cooking for one I would have leftovers to eat for lunch the next day.

As I’m a bit fussy with food, it was easy for me to swap the cheese out of two of the meals. I also decided not to make the coleslaw in the jacket potato recipe. Ideally it would be nice if there were more vegetarian options to choose from, as I did find the selection to be a bit limited, but I really enjoyed what I did have.

My partner also liked the tacos, and we enjoyed eating the portobello mushroom burgers together.

Final Thoughts

I would highly recommend ordering from Hello Fresh. The ingredients were great quality and the meals that we cooked were delicious, despite my limited culinary skills!

If you’re a really fussy eater then you might find their menu to be a bit limited, although there are lots of options and I think that most people would be absolutely fine.
